Cooling System Performance

The cooling system is not performing as the module expects - the engine is not reaching its operating temperature, taking too long to get there, or not holding it. This is a whole-system complaint, and a thermostat stuck open is by far the most common single cause.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the coolant temperature during a normal drive. An engine that never reaches its usual operating range points squarely at the thermostat.
  2. Check the coolant level when the engine is cold - never open a hot cooling system.
  3. Feel the heater output. Poor cabin heat alongside this code strongly supports a thermostat stuck open.
  4. Check whether the cooling fan is running when it should not be.
  5. Note that an engine running cold uses more fuel and wears faster, so this is worth fixing even though nothing feels wrong to drive.
  6. If the engine is running hot rather than cold, treat it as urgent - stop and read the overheating guidance rather than continuing.
