Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vent Control Circuit/Open

Severity: Low
Driving: Drivable — book it in

A fault in the EGR vent control circuit - open or unclassified, which usually means an open circuit or an intermittent connection. The vent valve bleeds vacuum out of a vacuum-operated EGR system so the EGR valve can close again. When it fails, the EGR valve tends to be slow to close or to stay open longer than intended.

Possible causes

CommonFailed EGR vent solenoid
CommonCorroded or damaged connector at the vent solenoid
PossibleWiring fault in the vent control circuit
PossiblePerished or disconnected vacuum hose at the vent valve
RareFaulty control module driver

What you might notice

Check engine light on
Rough idle in some cases
Failed emissions test
Frequently no symptom the driver notices

What to check, in order

Check continuity through the control wire and reseat the connector.
Inspect the vent solenoid connector and its wiring.
Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
Check the vacuum hoses at the vent valve. Perished hoses are common on the age of vehicle that has this system.
Check for other EGR codes. This valve rarely fails alone, and a companion code usually identifies the real problem.
