Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" / "B" Correlation

The two vehicle speed sources disagree. Two are used so that one failing can be detected, and this is that check working - the module cannot tell which is wrong. Mismatched tyres are a surprisingly common and entirely mechanical explanation.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the tyres. A space-saver spare, mismatched sizes or badly uneven wear makes the two sources genuinely disagree, and no electrical diagnosis will resolve that.
  2. Watch both speed sources together on the live data screen during a steady drive.
  3. Compare the reported speed with a known-good reference on a steady drive.
  4. Inspect the connector and wiring under the vehicle for corrosion and impact damage.
  5. Inspect the sensor tip for metal debris.
  6. Check for ABS or wheel speed sensor codes - on many vehicles road speed is derived there.
  7. Ask whether non-standard wheels or tyres have been fitted.
