Throttle Actuator Control Motor Circuit/Open

Severity
Critical
Driving
Drive only to a garage

An open circuit in the throttle actuator control motor. The module cannot drive the throttle plate at all, so the engine will be held to a fixed minimum opening - a reduced-power mode that arrives without warning and without regard to what you are doing at the time.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Be aware that power can be cut without warning. Avoid overtaking and motorway slip roads until this is fixed.
  2. Inspect the throttle body for carbon. On a drive-by-wire throttle, cleaning without running the relearn procedure afterwards can leave the idle worse than before - check whether a relearn is specified before starting.
  3. Compare commanded against actual throttle position on the live data screen through a full sweep.
  4. Inspect the connector at the throttle body for corrosion.
  5. Measure the actuator motor resistance against specification.
