Shift/Timing Solenoid Range/Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The shift/timing solenoid is electrically sound but is not controlling shift timing as commanded. Shifts take the wrong amount of time - dragging out, overlapping, or arriving abruptly. Since the circuit checks out, the cause is usually hydraulic: a sticking solenoid or valve, or fluid that has lost its properties.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the fluid level and condition first, and check what specification was fitted at the last service.
  2. Read all codes for other solenoid or ratio faults.
  3. Check whether the fault changes with fluid temperature - a shift complaint that only appears cold points at fluid or a sticking valve.
  4. A pressure test separates hydraulic causes from mechanical wear.
  5. Check whether an adaptation reset is specified. A module that has adapted around a developing fault keeps compensating until it is reset.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
