Transmission Range Sensor Circuit High

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The transmission range sensor signal is stuck high - typically shorted to voltage or an open earth. The module has no believable indication of which gear you have selected, so it will refuse to shift normally and will usually hold one gear.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the sensor and check whether the high reading persists at the harness. If it does, the fault is in the wiring, not the sensor.
  2. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water. This connector sits low and takes constant road spray.
  3. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor before condemning it.
  4. Follow the harness along the transmission looking for chafe damage against the case or a bracket.
  5. Check the fluid level and condition while the vehicle is raised.
