Shift Solenoid "E" Stuck On

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Shift solenoid "E" is stuck on - applying when it should be released. Because the gear it controls stays engaged, the transmission can end up trying to hold two gears at once, which it will not tolerate: expect very harsh behaviour, a refusal to shift, or a stall as the car slows.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. If the engine stalls as you come to a stop, treat it as urgent - losing the engine means losing power steering and brake assistance at a junction.
  2. Check whether the solenoid circuit is being held energised electrically. A shorted wire mimics a jammed solenoid exactly and is far cheaper to repair.
  3. Check the fluid level and condition, and look for debris.
  4. Read all codes. Several stuck solenoids point at contaminated fluid affecting the whole valve body.
  5. Do not drive it far in this state. Two gears trying to engage at once puts very high loads through the transmission internals.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
