Clutch Switch Input Circuit Malfunction

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the clutch switch circuit on a manual or automated manual transmission. The module uses this switch to know when the clutch pedal is down - to allow starting, to cancel cruise control, and to manage fuelling during gear changes. The car will usually still drive, but starting and cruise control may not work as expected.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the clutch switch state on the live data screen while pressing the pedal fully.
  2. Check the switch adjustment. Most of these faults are adjustment or a worn striker, not a failed switch.
  3. Inspect the connector at the switch - it lives in the footwell and gets kicked.
  4. Check the pedal bushings. Worn bushings change how far the pedal has to travel to reach the switch.
  5. Ask whether an aftermarket alarm or immobiliser was fitted, since these are often wired into the clutch or brake switch.
