Shift Solenoid "D"

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

A fault in shift solenoid "D". Shift solenoids are the valves that route hydraulic pressure to the clutches that make each gear. When one is faulty, the gears that depend on it become unavailable, so the transmission will typically hold a single gear and refuse to shift.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the fluid level and condition first.
  2. Note which gears you can and cannot reach. The pattern of missing gears tells a transmission specialist a great deal and costs nothing to observe.
  3. Read all transmission codes. Several solenoid codes at once point at the case connector, the internal harness or contaminated fluid.
  4. Inspect the case connector for fluid ingress and corroded pins.
  5. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification where it can be reached.
  6. On many transmissions the solenoids sit in a valve body or mechatronic unit and are not supplied separately. Establish what the actual repair is before budgeting for it.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
