Normal/Performance Switch Circuit

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

A fault in the circuit for the switch that selects between normal and performance shift modes - the sport, economy or winter button on many automatics. The transmission will default to its normal programme. The car drives entirely normally; what you lose is the ability to change the shift character.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the switch state on the live data screen while operating it.
  2. Inspect the switch and its connector. Console switches suffer from spilled drinks more than anything else.
  3. Check the wiring between the switch and the module.
  4. Confirm the transmission behaves normally in its default mode - if it does, this is a comfort fault and can wait.
  5. Check for other transmission codes. A mode switch fault alone is minor; alongside shift complaints, deal with those first.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
