Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The transmission range sensor signal is dropping out intermittently. The module briefly loses the selector position and then gets it back. Intermittent faults of this kind are nearly always connections or wiring rather than a component, because a failed component fails consistently.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note when it happens. Over bumps means wiring; when hot means the sensor; when wet means the connector. That one observation is worth more than any measurement here.
  2. Wiggle-test the harness and connector with the live data screen showing the selector position.
  3. Inspect the connector for a pin that has backed out of its housing - the most common single cause of an intermittent sensor signal.
  4. Check the sensor adjustment and the linkage for free play.
  5. Do not replace the sensor on the strength of an intermittent code alone. Confirm the fault at the sensor first.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
