Pressure Control Solenoid "A" Intermittent

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The circuit for pressure control solenoid "A" is faulting intermittently. The transmission may drive normally for long periods and then shift harshly or drop into limp mode without obvious cause, recovering after a restart. Intermittent electrical faults here are usually connections rather than components.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note whether it only happens hot. A fault that appears after twenty minutes of driving and clears overnight points strongly at the internal harness or the solenoid itself.
  2. Pull the case connector and inspect for fluid and corrosion.
  3. Wiggle-test the external harness with the engine running and the live data screen showing solenoid status.
  4. Check the fluid level and condition.
  5. Record the freeze frame data if the tool supports it. Knowing the fluid temperature when the fault set is often what identifies a heat-related failure.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
