Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit

Severity

A fault in the transmission fluid temperature sensor "A" circuit. The module uses fluid temperature to decide when to lock the torque converter, how firmly to shift and whether to allow full performance, so without a believable reading it takes a cautious default: shifts feel wrong, and the converter may never lock up.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Compare the reported fluid temperature with engine coolant temperature on a cold vehicle that has stood overnight. Both should read close to ambient. A reading far from ambient on a cold car proves the sensor wrong without any dismantling.
  2. Check the fluid level and condition.
  3. Inspect the transmission case connector for fluid ingress and corrosion.
  4. Check the wiring between the case connector and the module.
  5. On many transmissions this sensor is part of the internal solenoid pack or valve body, so replacing it means dropping the pan. Confirm the fault properly before starting.
