Pressure Control Solenoid "B" Performance or Stuck off

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

Pressure control solenoid "B" is electrically sound but is not controlling pressure as commanded - it is not responding, or is stuck in its off position. Line pressure is therefore wrong, and since line pressure is what holds the clutches together, the transmission will either slip or shift very harshly depending on which way the error goes.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the fluid level and condition first, and look for clutch material in it.
  2. Check when the transmission was last serviced. A blocked filter produces low pressure that looks exactly like a failed pressure solenoid.
  3. Compare commanded pressure against actual pressure on the live data screen if the vehicle reports both.
  4. Read all codes. Ratio codes alongside this one mean the clutches are already slipping.
  5. A proper line pressure test with a gauge is the way to separate a solenoid fault from a worn pump. It is worth paying for before buying parts.
  6. Slipping clutches destroy themselves quickly. Do not keep driving a transmission that slips while you decide what to do.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
