Output Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The output speed sensor is producing no signal at all. The module is receiving nothing where it expects a speed reading, so it cannot confirm what the transmission is doing and will fall back to a failsafe - typically one fixed gear, with harsh engagement.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Ask whether the transmission or a nearby component has been worked on recently. A connector left unplugged is the most common cause of an outright missing signal.
  2. Check for continuity through the sensor circuit at the module connector.
  3. Measure the sensor resistance against specification, and inspect its tip for debris.
  4. Check the reluctor ring the sensor reads, if it can be seen. A sheared ring produces exactly this with a good sensor.
  5. Check the fluid level and condition.
