Shift/Timing Solenoid Low

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The shift/timing solenoid circuit is reading low - typically shorted to earth or open circuit. The module cannot control shift timing and will fall back to a failsafe, which usually means harsh shifts or a single fixed gear.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Disconnect at the case connector and check whether the low reading persists at the harness side. If it does, the fault is external to the transmission.
  2. Inspect the connector for fluid ingress and corroded pins.
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  4. Check the harness for chafe damage between the module and the transmission.
  5. Read all codes - several solenoid electrical codes at once point at the internal harness or connector.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
