A fault in the circuit the transmission module uses to send engine speed information onward - to the instrument cluster, the engine module or another system. The transmission itself is generally unaffected; what fails is something downstream that was relying on that signal.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Establish what actually uses this signal on the vehicle, then check whether that thing works. If the rev counter is fine, the fault is in the circuit rather than in what it feeds.
  2. Inspect the connectors at both ends of the circuit.
  3. Check the wiring for chafing and shorts.
  4. Ask whether aftermarket equipment - a rev limiter, an alarm, a performance gauge - has been spliced into this wire.
  5. Check for other transmission codes. This one rarely matters on its own.
