Shift Solenoid "B" Intermittent

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The circuit for shift solenoid "B" is faulting intermittently. The transmission drives normally most of the time and then shifts badly or drops into limp mode, usually recovering after the engine is switched off and restarted. As with all intermittent circuit faults, look at connections before components.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note whether it only happens hot. A fault that appears after twenty minutes and is gone the next morning points at the internal harness or the solenoid.
  2. Record the freeze frame data. The fluid temperature at the moment the code set is often the most useful clue available.
  3. Pull the case connector and inspect for fluid and corrosion.
  4. Wiggle-test the external harness with the live data screen showing solenoid status.
  5. Check the fluid level and condition.
  6. Do not commit to internal repairs until the external wiring and connector are cleared.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
