The engine speed output circuit from the transmission module is stuck high - typically shorted to voltage. The module cannot deliver the engine speed signal to whatever consumes it, so that system loses its reading while the transmission itself carries on normally.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Disconnect the receiving module and see whether the high reading persists. If it clears, the receiving module is loading the circuit.
  2. Inspect both connectors for corrosion.
  3. Follow the wire looking for chafe damage.
  4. Check for aftermarket splices into this circuit.
  5. Confirm the transmission module has good power and earth before condemning it.
