Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch High Voltage

Severity
High
Driving
Short journeys only

The oil pressure signal is reading high - typically shorted to voltage or a lost earth. Treat this carefully: a blocked passage or the wrong oil grade can genuinely raise pressure, though that is much less common.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the sensor and check whether the high reading persists at the harness. If it does, the fault is in the wiring rather than the sensor.
  2. Before concluding it is electrical, confirm the real pressure with a mechanical gauge.
  3. Check the oil level first. It costs nothing, it is the most common cause, and it is the one thing you must not skip.
  4. Inspect the connector at the sensor for oil contamination - a leaking sensor seal fills its own plug and produces an electrical fault from a mechanical leak.
  5. Check the wiring for chafe and heat damage.
  6. Confirm the actual pressure with a mechanical gauge before dismissing this as a sensor fault. That measurement is the only thing that separates a lying sensor from a dying engine.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
