Cruise Control Vacuum Control Circuit/Open

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

The cruise control vacuum control circuit is reading an open circuit - typically a broken wire or a failed winding. On a vacuum-operated cruise system, the vacuum solenoid pulls the throttle open and the vent solenoid lets it close again; losing control of either means the system cannot hold a steady speed and will be disabled.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the vacuum hoses first. On a vacuum-operated cruise system a perished or disconnected hose is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix.
  2. Measure the solenoid winding resistance against specification.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion.
  4. Check the vacuum supply and its non-return valve.
  5. Confirm ordinary driving is unaffected before deciding how urgent this is.
