A/C Evaporator Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Severity
Low
Driving
No driving restriction

The evaporator temperature signal is dropping out intermittently. Cooling may work perfectly and then stop, often after the system has been running for a while - which is also what genuine icing looks like.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Compare the reported evaporator temperature with ambient on a system that has been off overnight - they should be close.
  2. Check the evaporator drain is clear. A blocked drain fills the housing with water, which reaches the sensor and its connector.
  3. Inspect the connector for corrosion and water.
  4. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor.
  5. Note that this sensor exists to stop the evaporator freezing solid. If airflow drops away after ten minutes of use, the evaporator is icing and the sensor is not doing its job.
