Brake Booster Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The brake booster pressure signal is dropping out intermittently. The pedal may feel normal most of the time and occasionally harder - and an intermittent change in brake feel is worse than a consistent one, because you cannot anticipate it.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note whether the pedal feel changes with the fault. If it does, the vacuum supply is intermittent rather than the sensor.
  2. Wiggle-test the connector and harness with the engine running.
  3. Test the pedal before driving. With the engine off, press the brake pedal several times to use up the stored vacuum, then start the engine with your foot on the pedal - it should sink slightly as assistance arrives. If it does not, assistance is genuinely missing.
  4. Check the booster vacuum hose and its non-return valve for splits and looseness.
  5. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion and water.
  6. Check the reference voltage and earth at the sensor.
  7. On a diesel or a direct-injection petrol engine, check the vacuum pump - these engines make little vacuum of their own and depend on it.
