Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" Range/Performance

Severity

Driving
Drivable — book it in

The vehicle speed signal from sensor "A" is present but implausible - it does not agree with what the module expects from engine speed, gear and load. The sensor is producing something, just not something believable.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Compare the indicated speed against a known-good reference, such as a phone GPS, at a steady speed.
  2. Ask whether wheels, tyres or the final drive have been changed - a significant size change makes a healthy sensor read wrongly.
  3. Inspect the sensor tip and the ring it reads for damage or debris.
  4. Check the sensor's ground and look for chafed wiring picking up interference.
