Closed Throttle Position Switch

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A fault in the closed throttle position switch - the switch that tells the module the accelerator is fully released. Without it the module cannot be certain when to go to idle control, so idle speed, overrun fuel cut and cruise control cancellation can all behave oddly.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the switch state on the live data screen while pressing and releasing the accelerator.
  2. Check the throttle actually closes fully - carbon around the throttle plate stops it reaching the stop, and the switch is then telling the truth.
  3. Check the switch adjustment before condemning it.
  4. Inspect the connector and wiring at the throttle body.
  5. Check the throttle cable adjustment on a cable-operated throttle.
