A fault in the vehicle speed sensor "A" circuit. Road speed is used by more systems than most people expect: the speedometer, the transmission's shift decisions, cruise control, power steering assistance on some cars, and stability systems. Losing it affects several of those at once.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Watch the speed value on the live data screen while driving slowly. Zero or a jumping value confirms the fault.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring - these live in an exposed position and suffer from salt, water and stone damage.
  3. Check whether ABS or stability codes are also stored. On many vehicles road speed comes from the ABS module's wheel speed sensors, so the real fault may be there.
  4. Check the sensor's mounting and the condition of the ring it reads.
  5. Because the transmission uses this signal to decide shifts, do not ignore this code for long.
