Brake Switch "A" Circuit

Severity

Driving

A fault in the brake switch "A" circuit. The module uses this to know when you are braking - to cancel cruise control, release the shift interlock and unlock the torque converter. A fault shows up in those places rather than in the brakes themselves, which still work normally.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Look at the brake lights. Working brake lights that go off when the pedal is released eliminate most of this without any tools.
  2. Check the switch adjustment at the pedal - these are adjustable and drift as the plastic striker wears.
  3. Watch the brake switch state on the live data screen while someone presses the pedal.
  4. Inspect the connector in the footwell, where feet catch it.
  5. Ask whether an aftermarket alarm or cruise control was fitted.
