Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance

Severity
High
Driving
Short journeys only

The oil pressure sensor is answering, but the pressure it reports is not plausible - it does not change with engine speed the way it should, or it sits at an unlikely value. Either the sensor is wrong, or the pressure genuinely is, and the second possibility is the one that matters.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Fit a mechanical gauge and measure the real pressure at idle and at raised engine speed. Everything else here is guesswork until you have that number.
  2. Check the oil level first. It costs nothing, it is the most common cause, and it is the one thing you must not skip.
  3. Inspect the connector at the sensor for oil contamination - a leaking sensor seal fills its own plug and produces an electrical fault from a mechanical leak.
  4. Check the wiring for chafe and heat damage.
  5. Confirm the actual pressure with a mechanical gauge before dismissing this as a sensor fault. That measurement is the only thing that separates a lying sensor from a dying engine.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
