Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Range/Performance

Severity
Low
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The oil temperature reading is within its valid range but not plausible - not rising as the engine warms, or disagreeing with coolant temperature after the vehicle has stood overnight.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the oil level before anything else. It costs nothing, and a level low enough to uncover the sensor is a far more serious problem than the sensor itself.
  2. Compare oil temperature against coolant temperature after a cold soak. They should agree closely on a cold engine, and oil should then warm more slowly than coolant once running.
  3. Inspect the connector. These sensors sit in oil and heat, and their connectors harden and crack.
  4. Check the earth and the wiring before replacing the sensor.
  5. Watch oil and coolant temperature together through a full warm-up. Oil should lag coolant and then settle above it; a reading that tracks nothing is the faulty one.
