O2 Sensor Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

A general fault on the upstream oxygen sensor for bank 1 - the sensor sitting before the catalytic converter. This is the sensor the engine uses to trim the fuel mixture in real time, so a fault here affects how the engine runs, not just emissions. The module has seen something wrong with the circuit without narrowing it to high, low or slow.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Inspect the sensor's wiring and connector. Oxygen sensor leads run close to hot exhaust and chafe or melt more often than the sensor itself fails.
  2. Check for exhaust leaks ahead of the sensor. Air drawn in through a leak gives false readings and produces sensor codes on a healthy sensor.
  3. Watch the sensor's voltage on the live data screen with the engine warm. A working upstream sensor should oscillate rapidly rather than sit still.
  4. Check whether other codes are stored. A fuel trim code alongside this one usually means the sensor is reporting a real mixture problem rather than being faulty itself.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
