Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit

Severity

Driving

A fault in the intake air temperature sensor circuit. The module uses air temperature to fine-tune fuelling and ignition timing, since cold air is denser than warm air. A fault here has a smaller effect than an airflow fault, but it still degrades fuelling accuracy.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the intake air temperature reading on the live data screen with the engine cold. It should be close to ambient temperature - an obviously implausible value confirms the fault.
  2. Inspect the connector and wiring.
  3. On many vehicles this sensor is built into the mass airflow sensor, so check whether it can be replaced separately.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
