Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Low

The oil temperature signal is reading low - outside the range a working sensor produces. As with the other temperature sensors, the electrical direction and the temperature direction are opposite: a short reports impossibly hot oil and an open circuit reports impossibly cold.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the oil level before anything else. It costs nothing, and a level low enough to uncover the sensor is a far more serious problem than the sensor itself.
  2. Compare oil temperature against coolant temperature after a cold soak. They should agree closely on a cold engine, and oil should then warm more slowly than coolant once running.
  3. Inspect the connector. These sensors sit in oil and heat, and their connectors harden and crack.
  4. Check the earth and the wiring before replacing the sensor.
  5. Unplug the sensor and watch which way the reading jumps. Open and short drive it to opposite extremes, which separates a wiring fault from a sensor fault immediately.
