Timing Reference High Resolution Signal "A" Intermittent/Erratic Pulses

The high-resolution timing reference signal "A" is erratic - the pulses are there but not consistent. Intermittent faults of this kind are usually connections or interference rather than the sensor.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Wiggle-test the harness with the engine running.
  2. Note whether it correlates with engine speed, load or temperature.
  3. Read all codes. Crankshaft and camshaft codes alongside these point at timing rather than at this sensor.
  4. Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, chafing and heat damage.
  5. Inspect the sensor tip for debris and the trigger wheel for damage.
  6. Check the harness routing. This is a fine-resolution signal and it is more vulnerable to interference than most, so a lead re-routed against an ignition component can cause it.
