Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

A fault in the ignition or distributor engine speed input circuit. On a distributor-equipped engine this is how the module knows engine speed and firing position - the equivalent of the crankshaft sensor on a distributorless engine.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check inside the distributor cap for moisture, cracks and corroded contacts - the cheapest thing to eliminate.
  2. Check the connector and wiring at the distributor.
  3. Watch engine speed on the live data screen while cranking.
  4. Check the distributor shaft for play. A worn shaft moves the pickup out of position and produces an erratic signal that no new sensor will fix.
