Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Circuit (Bank 1)

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

A fault in the circuit for camshaft position sensor "B" on bank 1. This sensor tells the module where the camshaft is, which is how it knows which cylinder is on its firing stroke and, on engines with variable valve timing, whether the cam is where it was commanded.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the engine oil level and condition. On an engine with variable valve timing the cam actuators are oil-driven, so low or dirty oil produces camshaft timing codes with perfectly good sensors.
  2. Inspect the connector for oil contamination and corrosion.
  3. Check the wiring for chafe and heat damage.
  4. Read all codes. Crankshaft codes alongside camshaft codes point at timing rather than at a sensor.

Read this code from your own car

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
