Misfire Detected with Low Fuel

Severity

Driving

A misfire was detected while the fuel level was low. The control module reports this separately because running out of fuel causes a misfire that is not a mechanical fault - the engine is simply being starved. It is the module telling you it noticed the tank was nearly empty.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Refuel, clear the code and drive normally. If it does not return, that was the cause.
  2. If the code returns with a full tank, check the fuel level sensor reading against the actual level.
  3. Persistent misfire with plenty of fuel in the tank points at the fuel pump or a blocked pickup.
