Timing Reference High Resolution Signal "B"

A fault in the high-resolution timing reference signal "B". Some engines use an extra, finer-grained timing signal on top of the main crankshaft signal, so the module can place ignition and injection more precisely. Losing it does not usually stop the engine, but it does force the module to work with less information.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Read all codes. Crankshaft and camshaft codes alongside these point at timing rather than at this sensor.
  2. Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, chafing and heat damage.
  3. Inspect the sensor tip for debris and the trigger wheel for damage.
  4. Check the harness routing. This is a fine-resolution signal and it is more vulnerable to interference than most, so a lead re-routed against an ignition component can cause it.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
