Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Low (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The signal from camshaft position sensor "A" (bank 1, or the only sensor on a single-bank engine) is reading low - typically shorted to earth or an open circuit. The module cannot tell where the camshaft is, so the engine may take a long time to start or may not start at all.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Unplug the sensor and check whether the low reading persists at the harness.
  2. Check the engine oil level and condition. On an engine with variable valve timing the cam actuators are oil-driven, so low or dirty oil produces camshaft timing codes with perfectly good sensors.
  3. Inspect the connector for oil contamination and corrosion.
  4. Check the wiring for chafe and heat damage.
  5. Read all codes. Crankshaft codes alongside camshaft codes point at timing rather than at a sensor.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
