Timing Reference High Resolution Signal "B" Too Few Pulses

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The high-resolution timing reference signal "B" is producing too few pulses - the module is seeing fewer edges than it expects. A damaged or contaminated trigger wheel, or a sensor with too large an air gap, will do this.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Inspect the trigger wheel for a damaged or missing tooth, and check the sensor air gap if it is adjustable.
  2. Read all codes. Crankshaft and camshaft codes alongside these point at timing rather than at this sensor.
  3. Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, chafing and heat damage.
  4. Inspect the sensor tip for debris and the trigger wheel for damage.
  5. Check the harness routing. This is a fine-resolution signal and it is more vulnerable to interference than most, so a lead re-routed against an ignition component can cause it.
