Rough Road Hardware Not Present

The module expects a rough road sensor and cannot find one. Rough road detection exists so that the bumps of a poor road surface are not mistaken for engine misfires - the crankshaft speed fluctuates in both cases. Without it, misfire detection is either disabled or prone to false alarms.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Ask whether a module has been replaced or recoded. A module coded for a specification the car does not have will look for hardware that was never fitted.
  2. Check whether the vehicle is supposed to have this sensor at all.
  3. Check for ABS or wheel speed codes - on many vehicles the rough road signal comes from that module rather than from a dedicated sensor.
  4. Treat misfire codes with suspicion until this is resolved, particularly ones that only appear on poor road surfaces.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
