Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit High (Bank 2)

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The signal from camshaft position sensor "A" on bank 2 is reading high - typically shorted to voltage or with a lost earth. Without a usable camshaft signal the engine may crank for a long time before starting, or not start.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the sensor earth before assuming a shorted signal wire - a lost earth commonly drives a signal high.
  2. Check the engine oil level and condition. On an engine with variable valve timing the cam actuators are oil-driven, so low or dirty oil produces camshaft timing codes with perfectly good sensors.
  3. Inspect the connector for oil contamination and corrosion.
  4. Check the wiring for chafe and heat damage.
  5. Read all codes. Crankshaft codes alongside camshaft codes point at timing rather than at a sensor.
