Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1)

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The signal from camshaft position sensor "B" on bank 1 is dropping out intermittently. The engine may run normally for long periods and then stumble, cut out or refuse to restart. Connections are a more likely cause than the sensor itself.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Note the conditions - hot, over bumps, or in the wet.
  2. Wiggle-test the harness with the live data screen showing the camshaft signal.
  3. Check the engine oil level and condition. On an engine with variable valve timing the cam actuators are oil-driven, so low or dirty oil produces camshaft timing codes with perfectly good sensors.
  4. Inspect the connector for oil contamination and corrosion.
  5. Check the wiring for chafe and heat damage.
  6. Read all codes. Crankshaft codes alongside camshaft codes point at timing rather than at a sensor.
