Misfire Detected - Fueling Disabled

Severity
High
Driving
Short journeys only

The module has detected a misfire severe enough that it has stopped injecting fuel into the affected cylinder. That is a deliberate protective action: unburnt fuel reaching the catalytic converter overheats and destroys it, so the module would rather run on fewer cylinders than pay for a converter. The engine will feel rough and down on power, and that is the protection working.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Read all codes. A misfire code names the cylinder, and that is where to start.
  2. Do not clear this and carry on. The module disabled that cylinder for a reason, and re-enabling it by clearing codes puts the converter back at risk.
  3. Check the ignition coil and spark plug for the named cylinder first - the cheapest and most likely causes.
  4. If ignition and fuel both check out, test compression on that cylinder. A mechanical problem is the remaining explanation.
  5. Have the vehicle recovered rather than driven any distance. Running on fewer cylinders loads the engine mountings and the remaining cylinders unevenly.
