Timing Reference High Resolution Signal "A" Too Many Pulses

Severity

The high-resolution timing reference signal "A" is producing too many pulses - more edges than the trigger wheel should generate. Electrical interference and a damaged trigger wheel are the usual explanations.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Extra pulses usually mean noise rather than a failed sensor. Check the harness routing and screening before replacing anything.
  2. Read all codes. Crankshaft and camshaft codes alongside these point at timing rather than at this sensor.
  3. Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion, chafing and heat damage.
  4. Inspect the sensor tip for debris and the trigger wheel for damage.
  5. Check the harness routing. This is a fine-resolution signal and it is more vulnerable to interference than most, so a lead re-routed against an ignition component can cause it.
