Single Cylinder Misfire (Cylinder not Specified)

Severity
High
Driving
Short journeys only

A single cylinder is misfiring, but the control module cannot tell which one. This usually appears on engines where the module lacks the sensor resolution to identify individual cylinders, so it reports the fault without naming the culprit. Treat it as a single-cylinder misfire that you have to locate yourself.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Pull and inspect all the spark plugs. The odd one out - oil fouled, carbon black, or visibly different from the rest - identifies the cylinder.
  2. With the engine running, feel each exhaust pulse or use a temperature reading at the manifold. A cold runner marks a dead cylinder.
  3. Once you know which cylinder, treat it as a single-cylinder misfire and work through coil, plug, injector, compression in that order.
