Injector Control Pressure Too Low - Engine Cranking

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The injector control pressure is not reaching the level needed to start the engine. These systems need a minimum pressure before they will fire an injector at all, which is why the symptom is cranking without starting rather than running badly.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the oil level and grade. Oil that is too thick when cold is a common reason a diesel of this type will not start in winter but starts fine in summer.
  2. Look for leaks at the high-pressure rail and standpipes - a leak that is insignificant when running prevents pressure building during cranking.
  3. Watch the reported pressure while cranking and compare it against the minimum in the specification.
  4. Check the engine oil level, condition and grade first. These systems use engine oil at very high pressure to fire the injectors, so oil that is low, degraded or the wrong grade causes faults here before anything else does.
  5. Inspect the connector for oil contamination - a leaking sensor seal fills its own plug.
  6. Watch the reported pressure on the live data screen during cranking and at idle.
  7. Look for external oil leaks around the high-pressure rail and its fittings.
  8. Read all codes. A pressure-too-low code alongside a sensor code usually means the pressure is genuinely low and the sensor is right.
