O2 Sensor Signal Circuit Shorted to Heater Circuit (Bank 2 Sensor 1)

Severity
Medium
Driving
Drivable — book it in

The signal wire of oxygen sensor 1 on bank 2 is shorted to its own heater circuit. The oxygen sensor connector carries both a delicate low-voltage signal and a heater drawing real current, and this code means the two have found each other. Heat, chafing and corrosion between adjacent pins are the usual reasons.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Inspect the connector first. Corrosion bridging pins is the most common cause and it is visible once the plug is opened.
  2. Check the harness where it runs near the exhaust for melted or chafed insulation.
  3. Unplug the sensor and check whether the short persists at the harness side. If it clears, the sensor is internally shorted.
  4. Check for water in the connector, and for a boot or seal that has failed.
  5. Do not simply fit a new sensor into a melted harness - the new one will short the same way.
