O2 Sensor Signal Circuit Shorted to Heater Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 3)
- Severity
- Medium
- Driving
- Drivable — book it in
The signal wire of oxygen sensor 3 on bank 1 is shorted to its own heater circuit. The oxygen sensor connector carries both a delicate low-voltage signal and a heater drawing real current, and this code means the two have found each other. Heat, chafing and corrosion between adjacent pins are the usual reasons.
Possible causes
- CommonCorrosion bridging adjacent pins in the sensor connector
- CommonWiring melted or chafed where the harness passes near the exhaust
- CommonWater in the connector
- PossibleDamaged sensor with an internal short
- PossibleHarness damaged during previous exhaust work
What you might notice
- Check engine light on
- Fuel trim readings implausible
- Failed emissions test
- Blown fuse on the heater circuit in some cases
- Rough running
What to check, in order
- Inspect the connector first. Corrosion bridging pins is the most common cause and it is visible once the plug is opened.
- Check the harness where it runs near the exhaust for melted or chafed insulation.
- Unplug the sensor and check whether the short persists at the harness side. If it clears, the sensor is internally shorted.
- Check for water in the connector, and for a boot or seal that has failed.
- Do not simply fit a new sensor into a melted harness - the new one will short the same way.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
