O2 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit Low (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
- Severity
- Medium
- Driving
- Drivable — book it in
The reference voltage for the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 2 is reading low - typically shorted to earth, an open circuit, or a sensor loading it down. Without a correct reference the sensor's mixture readings are unusable and the module will ignore them.
Possible causes
- CommonReference circuit shorted to earth
- CommonFailed oxygen sensor pulling the reference down
- CommonCorroded or water-ingressed connector
- PossibleChafed harness against the exhaust or subframe
- PossibleFailed control module reference supply
What you might notice
- Check engine light on
- Worse fuel economy
- Failed emissions test
- Rough running
- Fuel trim stuck at a default value
What to check, in order
- Unplug the sensor and check whether the low reading persists at the harness. If it recovers, the sensor is the fault.
- Inspect the connector for water and corrosion.
- Check the harness for chafe damage where it runs near the exhaust.
- Check whether both banks have faulted, which would point at a shared reference.
- Clear the wiring before buying a sensor.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
