Injector Control Pressure Too Low

Severity
High
Driving
Drive only to a garage

The injector control pressure is lower than it should be. Without enough pressure the injectors cannot fire properly, so the engine misfires, runs roughly and may not start at all. Low oil level is the first thing to eliminate.

Possible causes

What you might notice

What to check, in order

  1. Check the oil level before anything else. These systems cannot make pressure from oil that is not there.
  2. Look for external leaks at the high-pressure rail, its fittings and the standpipes - these are a known weak point.
  3. Check the pressure regulator valve.
  4. Check the engine oil level, condition and grade first. These systems use engine oil at very high pressure to fire the injectors, so oil that is low, degraded or the wrong grade causes faults here before anything else does.
  5. Inspect the connector for oil contamination - a leaking sensor seal fills its own plug.
  6. Watch the reported pressure on the live data screen during cranking and at idle.
  7. Look for external oil leaks around the high-pressure rail and its fittings.
  8. Read all codes. A pressure-too-low code alongside a sensor code usually means the pressure is genuinely low and the sensor is right.

Plug an ELM327 adapter into the OBD-II port under the dashboard. Pin16 reads every stored, pending and permanent code, explains each one like this page does — offline, with no account — and shows what the car recorded when the fault was set.
